Day 885 Quincy August Moon Festival 2014

Sharing is caring!

The Annual  August Moon Festival will be held on   Sunday August 17th, 2014 11AM-5PM on Hancock St by Quincy Center. This is a great family friendly event to learn about the Chinese culture.

The festival  which is run by Quincy Asian resources  is a community event filled with vendors, food trucks, games, and activities for children. There will be performances held throughout the day, featuring a Lion Dance at our opening ceremony at 11AM. The event is great for families and to get to know the Quincy Community. Come join us for a day full of fun and excitement!10496207_10152521621598077_176990096929888225_o

The festival will have something for everyone: traditional dance and cultural performances, singing, drums, poetry, and an international food court and food trucks. The South Shore YMCA will be running crafts and games for children and health-promoting activities for people of all ages.

The August Moon Festival or Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the most celebrated Chinese holidays. It is held on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month. Chinese families celebrate the end of the harvest season with a big feast.

Unlike the American Thanksgiving dinner, the Chinese have mooncakes, which are round pastries filled with lotus seed paste instead of grandma’ apple pie. Friends and relatives also send mooncakes to each other as a way of giving thanks.

Dragon and lion dances, whose origins also date back to ancient China, are wonderful dances done during festivals, especially exciting are the dragon and lion dances

This year’s Quincy August Moon Festival would not be possible without the contributions of South Cove Community Health Center, Diamond Sponsors State Street, Mayor Thomas P. Koch and the City of Quincy, and the hard work of over 300 dedicated volunteers.

To get to the festival, take the T to Quincy Center. Car parking is in one of the free municipal lots on either side of Hancock Street. The rain date for the festival is Sunday, August 24th.
